Myth buster: Does wearing masks for longer duration raises CO2 levels? Is it risky?

During the pandemic times, information--both right and wrong, logical and illogical-- are swarming across the internet. As an aware citizen, one should definitely follow government authorised orders and directions. However, many times people do not get time to verify the information they are following.

One of such non-factual statements is that wearing masks for longer duration impacts health as the amount of CO2 level in the breathable air around a person increases.

On wearing masks many experts and researchers have given several recommendations; but everyone corroborates that this is so far the ultimate armour against COVID-19 infection.

How are masks useful against COVID infection?

The masks facilitate proper breathing and at the same time stop the spread of infection by restricting the air droplets to come in contact with the individual’s inhalation passage. Masks eliminate the risk of spread of coronavirus through air droplets released by an individual. As per research studies, wearing masks delays the transmission of coronavirus from one person to another. The duration by which masks stop the transmission varies as per the fabric and the structural composition, but even a cloth mask has the ability to cut the chain of transmission, as per the study.

All research studies pertaining to COVID-19 have confirmed the use of mask and sanitisation habits.

Global standardisation emphasizes on use of mask

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that wearing a mask does not raise the carbon dioxide (CO2) level in the air you breathe. On the rumors about CO2, the CDC says, "Cloth masks and surgical masks do not provide an airtight fit across the face. The CO2 escapes into the air through the mask when you breathe out or talk. CO2 molecules are small enough to easily pass through mask material. In contrast, the respiratory droplets that carry the virus that causes COVID-19 are much larger than CO2, so they cannot pass as easily through a properly designed and properly worn mask."

How to wear mask

How one wears a mask would say how safe one is from COVID-19 infection. International and national agencies have been regularly releasing advisories on how masks should be worn so that people stay safe even while continuing doing their daily chores. One should wear a mask that covers the nose and mouth and can be secured under the chin. A mask should fit snugly against the sides of your face. CDC suggests wearing a mask correctly and consistently for the best protection.
